How answer engines choose
Scroll down. Watch a simulation of the question a real prospect might ask — and how an AI assistant quietly decides who gets the business.
This is a simulated run — the same shape of research an AI assistant actually does before it answers. Scroll it into view to play it.
Clear compliance documentation and detailed case studies the model can quote directly.
Plain-language comparison pages that directly answer "best CRM for banking"-style questions.
Structured data and schema markup make its pricing and features easy for a model to extract.
Simulated for illustration — this page doesn't call a live AI model. It shows the shape of what one does.
It isn't luck, and it isn't the same as ranking well on Google. It comes down to four things a model can (or can't) find and trust.
AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, and Bingbot for Microsoft Copilot) either have clean access to your site or they don't. If they're blocked, slow, or lost in bad architecture, you're invisible before the model even starts "thinking."
A model builds its answer out of the clearest, most direct claims it can find. Vague marketing copy gets skipped in favor of competitors who state their facts plainly enough to lift and cite.
Models weigh what other sites say about you — reviews, comparisons, forums, press — not just your own claims about yourself. A great homepage with no outside corroboration still loses to a mediocre one with a dozen citations.
Stale pricing, discontinued features, or contradictions between your site and the rest of the web make a model hedge — or leave you out rather than risk recommending something wrong.
An AI answer isn't a search results page with ten spots on it. It's a short list — usually just a handful of names — and the rest of the market doesn't get a "page two."
When a buyer asks an AI assistant "what's the best CRM for banking," the model doesn't show them a list of every vendor that exists. It names two or three companies and stops there. If your company isn't one of them, you're not losing a ranking position — you're not in the conversation at all.
That's already happening today: 51% of B2B software buyers now start their research in an AI chatbot more often than Google (G2, 2026). When Ahrefs measured its own site, visitors arriving from AI search converted at 23× the rate of traditional organic visitors (Ahrefs), because they'd already been pre-sold before they landed. Every month your site isn't built to be quotable, crawlable, and corroborated is a month those three slots go to someone else — and stay there, since AI answers change slowly once a model settles on its shortlist.
